Broad labels keep the clue consistent
Football roles are fluid. A player can begin as a winger, move inside as a midfielder and finish as a full-back. Databases also disagree about whether a wide forward belongs under midfielder or forward. Clue XI uses a broad primary position so the clue remains readable across eras.
That simplicity has a trade-off: it cannot describe every tactical detail. The position should narrow the field, not settle a debate about one season in a player's career.
Forwards: rate and role
A central striker's goal total is usually read against appearances, while a wide forward may contribute in ways the league-goal column does not show. Two forwards with the same total can have different profiles if one reached it in half as many games.
Penalty responsibility also changes totals. The quiz does not separate open-play and penalty goals in the main clue, so use the number as a broad signature rather than a pure measure of finishing ability.
Midfielders: the widest range
Midfield covers holding players, passers, runners and number tens. A near-zero goal total can suit a defensive specialist; double figures across several seasons can fit a box-to-box player; a much higher rate may indicate an attacking midfielder or regular set-piece taker.
Because the range is wide, nationality and career route often do more identification work for midfielders. The goal number is best used to reject an obviously incompatible role.
Defenders and goalkeepers: longevity clues
For defenders and goalkeepers, appearances frequently tell the stronger story. High totals suggest sustained selection in positions where reputation is often built through consistency. Goals can still distinguish attacking full-backs and set-piece threats, but a low figure is normal.
The clue should never imply that scoring is the only valuable contribution. In Clue XI, the numbers are identifiers. They help reconstruct a career; they are not a ranking of how good that footballer was.
