How the daily football word game works

Name XI chooses a recognisable football player with a five-letter surname and turns it into a six-attempt puzzle. Every submitted surname must belong to a real player in the reviewed ClueXI pool. Your progress stays on this device, and completed results can be shared without revealing the answer.

Read the colours before guessing again

A green tile fixes a letter in that position. A yellow tile confirms a letter belongs elsewhere; move it in your next guess. A grey tile rules out another occurrence of that letter. With repeated letters, the answer only supplies as many matches as it actually contains, so one letter can receive both coloured and grey tiles in a guess.

Choose another eligible footballer surname that fits the evidence. Ordinary five-letter dictionary words are not automatically valid guesses. If a name is not accepted, check its spelling and whether it belongs to the Clue XI catalogue before using another attempt.

What you need to play

A free account unlocks Name XI; Pro is optional. Everyone receives the same daily surname, and this device keeps your progress. The public rules guide and football reading room are open without an account. For a different kind of word challenge, Name Five asks for players who connect a club and a nationality.
