01

Bundesliga history in context

The Bundesliga launched for the 1963/64 season after German football moved from regional top divisions to a single national league. Sixteen clubs took part in the first campaign, which began on 24 August 1963. That later start gives German career history a different structural boundary from England, Spain, Italy and France.

Clue XI covers Bundesliga careers overlapping 1980 onwards. The period includes academy pathways, movement between regional rivals, players developing at one German club before joining another contender and internationally known careers that later continued in Spain, England or Italy.

A Bayern Munich badge can be a powerful clue, but it is rarely enough alone. The earlier club—Schalke, Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart or another Bundesliga side—often reveals how the player reached the top level.

Competition history: Bundesliga – more than six decades of history.

04

A 100-appearance minimum

Bundesliga mode requires at least 100 senior league appearances in the selected competition. It focuses each question on players whose German top-flight career is substantial enough to recognise and compare.

05

Different clubs and generations

Expect much more than one dominant team. The pool covers players associated with clubs across Germany and careers from the 1980s onwards, including names such as Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, Ribéry and Reus.
